The Adam Godwin Soccer Academy is launching a travel tournament team for the 2019/20 season. The purpose of this team is to compete in 5-6 high level tournaments while providing quality coaching and training opportunities. The team will train twice per week, with an additional third optional training opportunity at the weekly Academy SPARQ training sessions. To be considered for the roster please plan to attend the tryout. Attendance at the tryout is free and open to current high school sophomores through current high school seniors.
WHAT WILL THE COST BE?
We are still working on the fine details of the cost, but in short it will be comparable to other teams and clubs in the region. We are currently looking at around $800-$900 and that will include entry fees to 6 tournaments. We are also working on a sponsor for the uniforms so there will be no additional costs there. We may, of course, open a team store for optional gear purchases, but we are aiming to cover the costs of the necessary items.
WHEN/WHERE WILL WE PRACTICE?
Again, the fine details are being worked on. The intention is to train twice per week, with an optional third training opportunity at the weekly AGSA SPARQ sessions. The number one challenge we currently have is finding a regular training facility, but the bottom line is that we will have one in place.
WHO WILL BE THE COACH?
Sam McGarrity will be the head coach and will run all training sessions and plan to take the team to all tournaments. We will have an assistant coach in place should Sam be unable to make a practice or a tournament. Adam Godwin will run all optional SPARQ sessions and potentially some training sessions, although he will not be at any of the tournaments due to his commitments as the head coach of Randolph College.
WHICH TOURNAMENTS WILL WE ENTER?
Again, those details are being worked on. But our intention is to enter quality tournaments run by SMC Tournaments which will challenge the players and also give them exposure to college coaches. SMC Tournaments run events such as the Virginia Cup, Williamsburg Columbus Day, and the Florida Winter Cup among others. Our contact, Blaine Stephenson, has confirmed we will be able to gain access to all of their tournaments of which you can find a list here by clicking here.
WHEN WILL THE SEASON RUN?
The intention is for this team to run through the Fall of 2019. Most likely beginning in August and running through until December. There is a possibility of an early 2020 tournament, but we should have that information within the next few weeks.
